San Pedro (Huachuma) — a long, progressive Andean medicine
A mainly daytime ceremony focused on the body, nature, emotions and relationships, within a prepared and supported setting whose working language is stated for every date.
This content can become a lived experience
Connecta Life is not only an information website: we organize retreats in Catalonia in English or French depending on the date, in small groups, with preparation, support and a group online integration session 2 weeks after.
What is San Pedro or Huachuma?
San Pedro is a columnar cactus from the Andes, mainly associated with the species Echinopsis pachanoi, formerly called Trichocereus pachanoi. The names Huachuma and Wachuma are also used for this ceremonial medicine.
Its use belongs to a long ritual history in Peru, Ecuador and other Andean regions. The ceremony takes different forms across traditions and contexts: this page presents the Connecta Life setting without claiming to summarise every Andean lineage.
The cactus naturally contains mescaline, a psychedelic compound. The experience is generally longer than ayahuasca or psilocybin: effects develop gradually and may last 8 to 12 hours, with substantial variation between people and preparations.
How might the experience be felt?
Experiences vary and no outcome can be guaranteed. Participants notably describe:
- Emotional openness and a different way of viewing certain relationships
- A sense of physical grounding and attention to bodily sensations
- A heightened connection with nature, light, sound and space
- Altered visual perception, often with more continuity than a sudden break
- Personal insights that later need to be expressed and integrated
The experience may be pleasant, difficult or ambivalent. San Pedro is not a medical treatment and does not replace diagnosis, psychotherapy or professional care.
How does a ceremony unfold?
- Before the retreat — safety questionnaire, individual interview, and review of medication, medical history and intentions.
- Morning opening — a reminder of the setting, consent and practical reference points for a long day.
- Gradual onset — initial effects may take time; the team remains available without forcing the process.
- Support throughout the day — continuous presence, a calm environment, and attention to physical and emotional needs.
- Return and rest — effects subside gradually; no demanding activity is planned after the ceremony.
- Integration — sharing on site, followed by an online group session in the selected retreat's working language two weeks later.
Contraindications and safety assessment
The preliminary interview is mandatory. Particular caution applies in the following situations:
- Personal psychiatric history: schizophrenia, psychosis, mania/hypomania or bipolar disorder.
- Severe cardiac conditions, uncontrolled hypertension or another cardiovascular risk requiring assessment.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding and age under 18.
- Psychotropic medication, including SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, certain antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, lithium or stimulants: individual assessment is mandatory.
- Any recent medical issue, unexplained symptom or medication change must be reported before participation is approved and then up to the start of the retreat.
⚠️ Safety: San Pedro is a long-lasting psychedelic. It may cause nausea, anxiety, and temporary increases in heart rate or blood pressure. It is contraindicated in several medical and psychiatric situations. Never change medication without consulting the prescriber.

- Continuous team presence throughout the ceremony
- On-site integration followed by an online group session in the selected retreat's working language two weeks after returning
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between San Pedro and ayahuasca?
San Pedro contains mescaline and generally produces an 8-to-12-hour experience, often mainly during the day. Ayahuasca combines DMT and MAO inhibitors and tends to last 4 to 6 hours. Their subjective qualities are often described differently, but no individual experience can be predicted.
How much time should I allow?
Effects generally last 8 to 12 hours after a gradual onset. The full day and quiet time after the ceremony must be reserved. Driving or returning to a demanding activity on the same day is not compatible with this setting.
Can San Pedro cause nausea?
Yes. Nausea, vomiting or digestive discomfort may occur. They are neither systematic nor presented as proof of purification. The team monitors general wellbeing and adapts support to the situation.
Does San Pedro have proven therapeutic effects?
Modern research on mescaline and mescaline-containing cacti remains limited. It does not support promises of individual therapeutic benefit. Connecta Life retreats are not medical treatment and do not replace professional care.
Is San Pedro legal in Spain?
Mescaline is listed among controlled psychotropic substances in Spain. The legal status of a living cactus, a preparation and the isolated compound should not be confused, and a private setting is not a general authorization. Connecta Life works without exporting substances and with informed consent. This general information is not legal advice.
How much does a San Pedro retreat cost?
The San Pedro format is offered on selected dates as part of a complete retreat. The working language is stated on each retreat page. The current programme, duration and price appear on our pricing page. You may book online; an individual interview and the medical questionnaire remain mandatory before participation is approved.
