Frequently asked questions about medicines

To help you see clearly between the 5 medicines, their differences, their uses and their risks.

What is the difference between Ayahuasca and Bufo (5-MeO-DMT)?

Both are powerful experiences but very different. Ayahuasca is a brew drunk in a ceremony of 4 to 6 hours: it is a progressive, narrative journey that allows you to revisit your life, your emotions, your patterns. Bufo Alvarius (5-MeO-DMT) is inhaled and lasts 15 to 30 minutes: it is a brief, blinding experience, often described as a dissolution of the ego and an encounter with unity. Ayahuasca lends itself to long emotional work, Bufo to brief mystical opening.

What is Kambo and why is it NOT a psychedelic?

Kambo is the secretion of an Amazonian frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor), applied to small superficial burns on the skin. It is not psychoactive and does not cause any alteration of consciousness: it is a powerful physical detoxifier. The effect lasts 30 to 60 minutes and manifests as an intense purge (sweats, vomiting, intestinal emptying). It is used to cleanse the body, restart the immune system and release energy blockages. It is physical and energetic work, not a psychedelic journey.

Which medicine to choose for a first experience?

For a first experience, Ayahuasca is most often recommended. Its long duration (4 to 6 hours) gives the facilitator time to accompany step by step, and allows the participant to integrate the experience gradually. Bufo, although shorter, is of such intensity that it is generally reserved for people already prepared. The final choice is made during the preliminary interview, depending on your intention, your inner state and your possible prior experience.

What is the difference between Ayahuasca and Psilocybin?

Both are classic psychedelics, but their imprint is distinct. Ayahuasca (mixture of DMT and MAO inhibitors) has a « maternal » side, sometimes confrontational, which pushes you to look at what you avoid. Psilocybin (mushrooms) is often described as softer, more introspective, closer to amplified meditation. Both last 4 to 6 hours. For a first deep emotional work, Ayahuasca offers a more structured framework; Psilocybin is well suited for introspection and reconnection to the self.

What is Yopo and why is it less well known?

Yopo is a sacred snuff — a powder prepared from Anadenanthera peregrina seeds — traditionally used by the peoples of the Orinoco (Venezuela, Colombia). It is inhaled and lasts 1 to 2 hours. Combined with an MAOI inhibitor, the journey lasts between 4 and 6 hours. It is less well known in the West than Ayahuasca because its use remains deeply rooted in South American shamanic traditions, and because it is often practiced in addition to other medicines, not alone. It is renowned for its visionary qualities and its energetic alignment.

Can several medicines be combined in the same retreat?

Yes, some of our formats combine several medicines — typically Ayahuasca and Bufo, or Kambo as physical preparation before Ayahuasca. The sequence is never trivial: it is designed so that each medicine prepares or deepens the work of the previous one. For a first retreat, we generally limit to a single medicine to allow clear integration. Combinations are offered with full knowledge, after a discussion about your prior experience.

Which medicine for ego dissolution? For purification? For introspection?

For ego dissolution and brief mystical opening: Bufo Alvarius (5-MeO-DMT). For physical and energetic purification: Kambo. For gentle introspection and work on emotions: Psilocybin. For deep and narrative emotional work: Ayahuasca. For shamanic vision and ancestral alignment: Yopo. These indications are general — the preliminary interview helps refine the choice according to your personal situation.

Are there specific risks for each medicine?

Yes, each medicine has its risk profile. Ayahuasca: drug interactions (antidepressants, MAOIs), normal nausea and vomiting, intense emotional confrontation. Bufo: extreme intensity, contraindicated in case of cardiac or psychiatric disorders. Kambo: cardiac risk in case of hypertension or kidney problems, violent physical purge. Psilocybin: emotional confrontation, temporarily disorienting. Yopo: nausea, brief but powerful effect. Each medicine is the subject of a dedicated medical evaluation during the preliminary questionnaire.

Are all these medicines legal in Spain?

The 5 medicines we use are located in distinct legal frameworks in Spain. Ayahuasca and Psilocybin benefit from tolerance in the ritual and therapeutic context (favorable legal grey area). Kambo and Yopo are not specifically regulated as they do not contain classified substances. Bufo Alvarius (5-MeO-DMT) is more sensitive and requires a strictly private and ritual setting. Connecta Life operates in compliance with the Spanish framework, in private circles with informed consent signed by each participant.
