Yopo — The Amazonian sacred powder
Traditional medicine of the peoples of the northern Amazon (Piaroa, Yanomami). An intense and brief visionary experience, administered by ritual snuffing.

Connecta Life is not only an information website: we organize French-led retreats in Catalonia, in small groups, with preparation, support and integration.
What is yopo?
Yopo (also called cohoba or parica depending on the region) is a sacred powder obtained by roasting and grinding the seeds of the Anadenanthera peregrina tree, native to the forests of the northern Amazon. The powder is then mixed with alkaline ashes from specific plants to activate its active compounds.
It mainly contains DMT, 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenine — a powerful cocktail that produces an intense visionary state. The nasal route allows very rapid absorption: effect felt within a few seconds.
The Piaroa, Yanomami, Guahibo peoples of Venezuela, Brazil and Colombia use yopo in ceremonies of shamanic vision and ritual transmission. The shaman takes yopo to "see" the cause of an illness, communicate with spirits, or guide an initiatory journey.
What is a yopo ceremony for?
Yopo is generally reserved for participants who already have some experience of altered states. Typical reasons:
- Deepening a process begun with other medicines
- Touching the archaic — raw visionary states, without the emotional "narrative" of ayahuasca
- Advanced shamanic work — transmission, vision, initiatory descent
- Radical release of a blockage that has not yielded with other approaches
This is not a medicine for discovering expanded states — its power and brevity require a certain psychic maturity.
How does a ceremony unfold?
- Preparation — preliminary interview, dieta, ENT check.
- Opening circle — shared intention, facilitator's presence.
- Snuffing — the powder is blown into one nostril and then the other through a traditional tube, by the facilitator or a partner. Strong initial sensation (burning, tears) for 10-30 seconds.
- Fast effect — intense visionary state within a few seconds. Peak around 5-10 minutes. Duration 15 to 30 minutes.
- Return — gradual come-down, facilitator's presence, sometimes mild purge.
- Integration circle — fresh sharing, putting the experience into words.
Who can participate?
Yopo requires a particular screening:
- Psychiatric/medical contraindications: severe psychiatric history, heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, pregnancy, minor, psychotropic treatments such as SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, certain antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers and lithium without safety evaluation.
- Yopo specificity: chronic ENT conditions (sinusitis, nasal polyps, severe deviation of the septum) that would make snuffing difficult or risky.
- Strong recommendation: already having prior experience of ayahuasca or psilocybin. Yopo is not a recommended gateway.
Why with Connecta Life?
Yopo is only offered exceptionally, to participants who explicitly request it and whose maturity we have assessed through other experiences:
- Private and cautious setting in Spain
- Powder prepared by traditional sources
- Facilitator trained in ritual snuffing
- Continuous presence during the experience (15-30 min but intense)
- Post-ceremony integration included
Frequently asked questions
Is yopo painful to take?
Nasal administration is intense for 10 to 30 seconds: burning sensation, watering eyes, runny nose. It is not pleasant, but it is brief and an integral part of the ritual in Amazonian traditions ("the medicine must find you"). The psychoactive effect comes very quickly and makes the initial sensation forgotten.
What is the difference with ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is slow (4-6 h), narrative, emotional, somatic (purge). Yopo is fast (15-30 min), visionary and raw, without the "inner film" of ayahuasca. Unique route of administration (nasal vs oral). Yopo is lesser known in the West, rarer in retreats.
What is the difference with bufo?
Bufo lasts 15-20 min (similar to yopo), but its effect is more of an ego dissolution, suspension of the self. Yopo is more visionary — visions, forms, spirits of the Amazonian tradition. Bufo is administered by inhalation, yopo by nasal snuffing.
Are there any risks?
Psychic risks: triggering of a psychiatric disorder in predisposed people (hence strict screening). Physical risks: spike in cardiac pressure, prolonged nasal irritation. No risk of addiction. The supervised setting minimizes residual risks.
Is yopo legal?
Like the other medicines, yopo is framed in Spain by a tolerated status within private ritual use. Anadenanthera peregrina is not a protected species. Our activity complies with case law and the cultural framework.
How much does a retreat with yopo cost?
Yopo is only offered occasionally, on request, as part of a complete retreat. Prices on our pricing page. Preliminary conversation mandatory to assess relevance.
